The American Women Who Carved Their Initials in the Colosseum

I don’t know if many of you read this story in the Guardian.  I’m not sure which US newspapers picked it up (if any), but 2 young American women decided it was right to carve their initials in the wall of the Colosseum in Rome so they could take a selfie.  This is wrong on so many levels and it burns me up that people have such little reverence for history and antiquity and these monuments that have stood for thousands and thousands of years.  These women were arrested, and will probably be sent home with a fine, but I’m sure they won’t learn a thing.

And, what did the women have to say for themselves?  “We apologize for what we did. We regret it, but we did not imagine it was something so serious.”  REALLY!?!?!  Defacing a thousand-year-old ancient Roman building isn’t something so serious.  Maybe I should go to their houses in California and carve my initials in the wall outside their front door, or maybe graffiti their swimming pool.  These people don’t think!!  They just do whatever gratifies them at that moment.  And for a SELFIE, no less…those vile, disgusting weapons of conceit that young people are so fond of these days.  I hope these GIRLS, I’m not calling them women anymore because that denotes some level of maturity, get fined more than they can pay and end up in jail.  I’m sure there are some nicely carved initials in the walls of the cells!

People Who Dote on Their Kids too Much

Recently I was at a hotel with a breakfast buffet.  I like those hotels because they provide breakfast, and you can go back to your room when you’re finished to clean up before going out for the day.  Needless to say, I was enjoying my breakfast when a family of 4 sat at the table next to me.  It was a pleasant family with mom, dad and 2 kids of about 10 and 12 years old.

The mother immediately got up and brought back juices for the 2 children.  The father went over to the buffet table and started to fill his plate with whatever he wanted, while the mother walked over with the children and made them hold their plates while she filled it for them.  She then brought them back to the table and continually asked them if they wanted anything else, or she would just get up and get them more juice or cereal or whatever.  She did not eat anything for herself yet, mind you.  The father was quite content with his food and ate his breakfast quietly while mom continued to dote on the children and jump up and down getting them more and more things.  She even wiped one of their mouths with a napkin at one point!  When they were finished, and mom could finally eat for herself, the children got a little “rambunctious” and the family left.  Mom had about 3 minutes to actually enjoy her breakfast.

Now, I may be wrong, but 10 and 12 year olds are fully capable of getting their own breakfast and pouring their own juice.  They can walk over to the buffet and get whatever they want to eat, without any outside help.  The children were not overly obnoxious or annoying to the point where mom might have been doing all this for them so as not to have them get out of hand.  I think she just didn’t know what else to do.  She dotes and dotes on her children as if there is nothing else for her to do in life.

I see this a lot, especially when I lived in China, and the child was the family’s only child. Not only would mom and dad dote on the child, but all 4 grandparents as well.  The children would begin to expect everyone to do everything for them.  They called it the “little emperor syndrome” in China.  These parents that do everything for the child like they are royalty created children that felt like they were royalty.  They created children that expected to be treated special and had a sense of entitlement that I have never seen matched.

Unfortunately, it’s not only the Chinese that do this with their children.  I have seen over-doting parents all over the world.  These people don’t understand that, even though they want to do everything for their children, they are creating people who can’t do anything for themselves, and will expect people to always do things for them.  These parents who fawn over their children and try to anticipate their every need are not helping their children at all.  They’re just making it more difficult in the long run because, eventually, that child is going to hear “no,” and they’re not going to be able to deal with it.

What I’m Reading and Watching About Barack Obama

I know I’m going to get some serious backlash for this one from the so called “Obamatrons,” who love everything he does and will defend him until the terrorists blow something up.  I don’t care.  I have been reading many news articles and news posts, and watching TV reports about some of the crap that the “commander in chief” has been doing, and it’s just really irking me.  Before I go any further, I’d like to say that I’ve been looking at things from both sides (the liberal left and the conservative right), and I’m seeing negativity towards Obama from both sides now.  It used to be the right that harangued him and pointed out his (many) flaws, but I think the liberal left has just about tired of the crap he pulls.

First, it’s the golfing.  I give the man some credit for trying to stay fit and playing a sport.  As the president of the United States, he must not have much time for exercise, but I’m reading too many things about his golfing occurring at times when he should be running the country, or at least acknowledging that things have happened.  Let’s face it, the man can even have a press conference from the golf course if he wanted to, I’m sure the press are there (they follow him like puppies).  If he did, it might give the important news the sense of urgency that it deserves.  He was playing golf while riots were happening in Missouri, he was playing golf when an American was beheaded by ISIS, he was playing golf when MH17 was shot down in Ukraine.  He was playing golf, he was playing golf, he was playing golf.  I could forgive his being on the golf course when those things occurred because it’s impossible to actually know when they will happen, but don’t finish the game!?!?  You stop right away and address the matter at hand.  You chose to take this job as US president, Barack, it’s a 24 hour job!!

Next, it’s the “executive orders” that he has put into play.  Just because people disagree with him doesn’t give him the right to circumvent those people.  It’s called “checks and balances” for a reason, Barack!  It’s a government, not a monarchy!  He can’t go around making his own decisions and enacting laws without having the support of the government.  Now look, because of his “executive order,” impoverished public school districts all over the United States will have an influx of illegal immigrant children that don’t speak English and don’t even have parents to take care of them.  These kids are going to be flooding already overloaded schools.  Is “His Highness” planning on increasing funding for these schools so they can have the resources to handle the influx of illegals that he’s flying around the country on the taxpayers’ dime?  No!!  He just expects it to get done.  He’s like a horse with blinders on…he gets one thing in view, and nothing else matters, not even things that are adversely affected.  Then he goes to play golf.

I also get annoyed by his secretiveness.  He didn’t tell a soul when he traded several known terrorists who threatened the United States and its citizens time and time again for 1 prisoner of war.  How many other prisoners of war are there, what makes this one so different than all the others that you have put the United States and its citizens in danger by releasing evil terrorists to bring one back.  Nobody was consulted, he just did it on his own.  I’m also a firm believer in the idea that Obama ordered the IRS to target his opposition, and the people that oppose him.  If you read about all the agencies and “charities” that were targeted, many of them have Conservative or Tea Party affiliations.  How serendipitous for him that the IT department at the IRS are a  bungling group of complete fools, that they can destroy hard drives and lose not a couple, but hundreds of e-mails that could shed light on this scandal.  Way to cover your ass, Barack!  Thank goodness for senators that don’t take crap in the hearings and are actually trying to get to the bottom of this.  I don’t think that many e-mails from that many hard drives for that specific amount of time could be lost, and I agree with the senators on the committee…I don’t believe them!  And don’t get me started on that whole affair in Benghazi!!

I know that the news is skewed, and not everything that is reported is actually the whole story.  I’m not naïve, I wasn’t born yesterday.  But, I have been hearing just too many negative and stupid things about this man FROM ALL POLITICAL SIDES that I’m believing a lot of it.  This man has changed the United States for the worse.  I sincerely hope that he hasn’t ruined the careers of those that have been associated with him.  I actually like Joe Biden and, while I’m not a big fan of Hilary Clinton, I don’t think she’s horrible.  I hope hitching their wagons to Obama hasn’t ruined everything for them in the future.  I know if I were a politician, I would definitely NOT want to be associated with this moron!

There are so many other things about this administration and “the man who would be king” that just get on my nerves and make me realize that he is destroying the country little by little.  He was not ready for this presidency, and he acts like a little child whenever he meets any resistance.  In fact, he acts like a child all the time.  Take a look at the photos of the world leaders from the recent NATO summit in Wales…who’s that moron in the middle that has to wave at the camera like “look at me mom?”  Why it’s the leader of the United States of America!  And it’s not the first time he felt the need to wave at the camera.  I guess he really DOES think everything is about him and damn anyone who doesn’t agree with that…then he goes to play golf!!

People Who Have to Stop Dead Before Getting on an Escalator

It seems like a lot of my posts lately have been about escalators.  Well, living in Singapore, you end up spending a lot of time in malls and where there are malls, there are escalators.  Today it’s about the people who can’t possibly get on an escalator in full stride.  They must stop, look down, place their foot and then continue.  These are the people that cause a long queue at the bottom or top of the escalator.  These are also the people who cause the “domino effect” of people walking into them from behind because they were expecting this person to just be NORMAL and get on the escalator in stride.

Today I narrowly avoided walking into a woman who had to stop at the bottom of the escalator, place her foot, grab the railing and then step on.  She took about 5 seconds to get herself set to get on the escalator.  I had since walked around her and jumped on the escalator before she did.  This is the same woman who walked up the escalator, after making a big production of actually getting on, only to stop dead again at the top to set herself up for the dismount.  Thus causing the 3 people that were walking up behind her to nearly fall when she abruptly stopped.

These people need to be told that they need to take the escalator in stride.  If it’s too complicated for them, or they just don’t have the manual dexterity to walk right onto the escalator, then they should take the elevator or the stairs.  FULL STOP!

People Who Walk Up or Down a Moving Escalator

escalator 2Living in Singapore, I’m told I have to stand to the left on the escalator so that the people who want to walk up or down can get by me on the right.  In Madrid, I had to stand on the right, so the people could get by me on the left.  Does anyone see the issue with these instructions?!?  Why are people walking at all on a MOVING STAIRCASE?  There’s a reason the escalator moves; so people don’t have to.  That’s why the escalator moves!!

I’ve heard all the hype about exercise and how little changes can mean a lot.  I understand that, and the people that choose to walk up the stairs are making those little changes.  Notice I said UP THE STAIRS!!  Why do you think the stairs are always next to the escalator??  So that people who choose to walk up or down can do so on the stairs, not on the escalator.  I’m tired of having to squeeze myself over to the side with my packages in hand so some idiot can get by me on the escalator.  Really!?!?!  Where are you going that you can’t wait the 15 seconds it takes for the escalator to reach the top?!?!  What’s wrong with you?!?!

Everyone over to the left so one lone man can walk up...ridiculous!

Everyone over to the left so one lone man can walk up…ridiculous!

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been on an escalator with bags, only to have some moron walk past me and knock into my bags.  Often, they are food bags containing things like eggs, and I get nervous that their carelessness has broken them.  More often than not, when I reach the bottom or the top of the escalator, that same “climber” is right in front of me again.  They have not gotten anywhere faster by annoying everyone around them and walking up or down.  They have ended up in the same place as I have, and in the almost the same amount of time.  Unless they’re running for a train or bus, there’s no reason to walk up or down the escalator.  USE THE STAIRS!!  That’s what they’re there for!  Stop annoying the people who know how to use the escalator in the manor for which it was invented!

Chris Kattan

kattan 1

One of the movie channels here has been showing previews for Corky Romano, a stupid comedy from the early century starring Chris Kattan as a reluctant member of a mafia family.  I get nauseated every time the preview comes on, and have to quickly change the channel.  Chris Kattan is my least favorite actor (if you can call him that).  He’s right up there with Jimmy Fallon, Johnny Depp and Charo.  His unfunny, pathetic turn in anything he does leads me to think that this is just another comedy actor who got his start because of his daddy.

Chris Kattan’s father is a former member of the Groundlings comedy troupe from Los Angeles.  Funnily enough, this is the same group Kattan got his start with when he was younger.  Kattan’s father acted in several television and film productions, his most memorable as Larrie Plum in Reno 911.  His dad is fairly funny, albeit predictable and an over-actor.  Kattan seems to have inherited the overacting from his father, but none of his marginal funniness!  Chris Kattan is just not funny!

kattan 2I have seen Corky Romano, and I have seen Night at the Roxbury (where he teamed up with another marginally funny comedian, Will Ferrell).  They were both horrible travesties.  Chris Kattan ruined those pictures (not that there was much there to ruin)!  He has lousy timing, horrible line inflection and he does physical comedy that just isn’t laughable.  Wait, change that, it IS laughable, but because of how bad it is.

How Kattan remained on Saturday Night Live for as long as he did is totally beyond me.  The program is usually very funny and cutting-edge.  Many of the comedians from that program have gone on to do much bigger and better things.  The fact that Chris Kattan was on that program for 5 seasons is a testament to how bad it got in the 1990s.  Some of the episodes in the 1990s have the lowest ratings of any of the episodes since the show began.  Chris Kattan is only one of the comedic duds they employed then (Will Ferrell was another).

kattan 3Kattan’s main recurring character on Saturday Night Live was a male exotic dancer named Mango.  He played Mango with a Hispanic accent, and very effeminately (although protesting that he was not gay).  Mango has to go down in history as one of the worst recurring Saturday Night Live characters ever (along with the Copy Machine Guy and Phillip, the “hyper hypo”).  Again, Kattan’s overacting ruined what might have been a funny premise.  In a character like Mango, you kind of have to overact, but Kattan even messed THAT up!

Chris Kattan’s turn in The Middle, recently, created some of the worst scenes of the show.  He overacts and tries so hard to steal the show, but all he stole were the minutes of my time that were wasted watching him on screen.  Some more of my life wasted by watching horrible acting and badly performed dialogue!  I love Patricia Heaton and I think the show is funny and quirky, but Chris Kattan was the worst thing about it.  Luckily, the producers realized that too, and summarily dismissed his character, and him from the show (and the town of Orson breathes a sigh of relief).

Personal problems aside (his arrests for drunken disorderly conduct and drugs), Chris Kattan does not deserve to be in any spotlight.  He ruined some very good characters and brought a program further down by being unfunny and a horrible over-actor.  How he keeps finding work is beyond my ken of understanding.  Luckily, not much has been heard from him since his boot from The Middle, maybe people have just had enough of him!  We can all hope….

People Who Arrive Late for a Movie or Show

cavaliaThis weekend I went a great show here in Singapore.  It’s called Cavalia, and it’s billed as “Cirque du Soleil with Horses.”  That’s exactly what it was!  It was awesome; acrobatic, funny, amazing….a great time.  Of course, as with all shows of this type, there was a slew of people who obviously didn’t get the memo that the show began at 7:30PM.  As soon as the lights went off, that familiar glow of the mobile phones came out with people looking for their seats.  These people walked up and down the stairs and shone their mobile lights in everyone’s eyes as they fumbled with their tickets and tumbled into their seats.

This is not the only time I have been in a situation like this.  Virtually every time I go to a movie or a play like Cavalia I am “treated” to about 15 minutes of fumbling and shining lights as the chronically late people inconvenience everyone around them to get their seats AFTER the show has started.  These are invariably the people who have seats in the middle of the row, and have to make everyone in the seats ahead of them stand so they can get to their seats.  This, thus, causes several rows of people behind them to lose their view of the film or show and ruins it for a lot of people.  Usually in a movie, there are important plot points that happen in the first few minutes, and missing them would cause a lot of confusion later.  As it was, last night, I missed the first group of horses running onto the stage because the people a couple of rows in front of us had to stand for some latecomers to get to their seats.  Ridiculous!!

When people come late to a movie, not only do they use the light from their mobile phones to find their seats, but they usually whisper loudly to each other, or take a few minutes to silence their phone (continuing the annoying light until they’re finished).  Or, they’re not sure where to sit, so they argue (in loud whispers, mind you) over where they should sit while their mobile phones are still lighting their way!  If they’re meeting someone, they whisper loudly to find that person, or shine their phones down each row to see if their friend is there.  These people are rude and don’t think about other people at all.  If they did, then they would have made certain that they arrived to the film or show on time!

I never stand for these people.  I make them step over my legs and have to work harder than usual to get to their seat in the middle of the row.  These people don’t deserve my courtesy because they are not courteous themselves.  They disturb everyone’s show by rudely arriving late and expecting everyone to take time from their enjoyment to ensure they get to their seats AFTER the show has begun.  These people don’t deserve our concern over their seats.  The only reason any of us deals with their crap is because we want it to end as quickly as possible so no more of the show or film is ruined for us.  There should be a rule…if the house lights are off, you don’t get in!  It’s as simple as that!  You are late, you can’t see the show…maybe you’ll be on time next time!
